Envitech's
in-situ Ammonia measuring systems are successfully employed
for final effluent monitoring and process control alike.
The PBS1 in-situ Ammonia analyser is widely used in
Southern Water for FE analysis, and by Severn Trent
water for dynamic trimming of DO set points in Nitrifying
ASP's. Savings of 15%have been demonstrated by this
approach. To download a presentation on this topic Click

Other operators have used AmNiSys, a cheaper ISE system
for similar process control.
The AmNiSys measuring system is currently used by EAWAG
in Switzerland for control of their development Annamox
units. This process, which uses 50% less energy than
conventional p rocesses, removes Ammonia from high strength
digester liquors by partially oxidising to Nitrite at
relatively low DO concentrations (<1mg/l) and reacting
Nitrite with Ammonia to produce Nitrogen gas and a small
amount of Nitrate, all within one reactor.
Control is key to the success for this process. Hence
measurement and control of DO, NH3-N, NO3 and NO2-N
is required. AmNiSys may currently be used for all these
except NO2-N. New more stable ISE membranes for NO2-N
measurement are currently being developed and tested.
The technology has now been successfully transferred
onto more than 10 full scale Annamox plants in Switzerland.
